…to play!
Practicing their spirals, Josiah gets in a line drive to Sam’s mouth, knocking out a tooth that was “almost” ready to come out. What amazes me is the absolute male response from Sam. There are no tears of pain. No fear over blood dripping from an empty socket. No accusations against the fatal blow and no rage over injustice.
What there is? Pride. Total and complete male pride over a wound, and better yet a bloody wound, taken in battle. Sam doesn’t want the blood cleaned up, no longer asks for a hug to make it better. His comfort now is in his Dad and brothers, other MEN, gathered around to ooh and ah over the ragged bit of his bloody gum, still clinging to its tooth. And he delights a little, too, in the way Mom shrinks back from the gore, and in pushing away the feminine offers of comfort and compresses. He grabs that dirty football and hollers to the other warriors….
“let’s go again.”

About sparrowjourney

Christian homeschooling mom to three boys, married to my best friend, John, for over 20 years. I love gardening without gloves, learning history with my kids, cooking with lots of butter, serving others, great books, rich coffee, studying the Bible, camping outdoors, scrapbooking, vintage home decor, the smell of rain and cut grass, authentic people, poetry, laughing until your sides hurt, and babies. oh and black licorice is pretty awesome.

Awesome! I’d certainly rather lose a tooth that way than the old string tied around the slamming door knob trick when I had a loose tooth. It never quite worked and we’d have to slam the door a few times, each time I’d be more freaked out.
