Sam and ZuZu

Our sweet little calico, Zuzu, is a killing machine. She looks so demure and acts innocently playful, but underneath that? She is a merciless, bloodthirsty hunter. The Catbib worked great the last two years, but now even giant neoprene cape hung about her neck can no longer impede her. She has figured out how to work around it, and daily she is dragging carcasses into the house to “share” with us. She doesn’t just bring in a body. No, she brings the victim in half alive so she can torture them slowly, then kill them before our very eyes, then race underneath our beds to crunch their bones. I’m not exaggerating, either-it’s seriously gruesome.
What does she hunt? Not just birds, though chickadees and sparrows (I know.)are her favorites. She has also drug into our house newts, large moths, shrews, voles, mice and even…

snakes.

She brought this little garter in last night. John scooped it up and returned it to the yard, and as he did so both of the snake lovers in our family watched him very, very closely. Zuzu, because “hey, that’s my night’s entertainment and midnight meal, bud. I worked hard for that. Where you goin?!” and Sam because “Cool! A snake!”

and this was taken yesterday, during a 106 degree record breaking heat wave. Sorry the photo is fuzzy…it’s not like there was any action going on when I took it. Both Sam and the cat were spread out in the MIDDLE of the walkway. Just chillin’ out!

I was working on the computer and looked over to see this and just laughed. That is so like Sam. To see the cat spread out on the floor and think “Hmmm. Good idea. I think I’ll join her.” and just lay down.

Our little calico Maddie is the same way, loves to hunt and bring in things for us- usually in the middle of the night. There is nothing stealthy about her playing with it though, and a lot of times we are too late to save whatever it is she has brought in.The biggest was a blue jay- the thing SCREAMED the whole time, and by the time I got to it, the poor thing's neck was broken- so I took it into the blackberry bushes so it could at least die in peace :(It's scary what such a small kitty can do!
