Summer List 2010

Don’t waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness….

Make the most of every chance you get.

~ Eph. 5:15-16 MSG

I steal. often.

I creep around the Internet, reading strangers blogs and shamelessly grabbing other peoples brilliant ideas. Like the idea for a Summer List, by Meg at (one of my favorite blogs!)

Today the kids and I sat around the kitchen island and brainstormed about all the FUN STUFF our family hopes to squeeze in to the all-too-short summer season!

We made a SUMMER LIST:

There are things we ALWAYS do (pick blackberries. go to the beach.)

there are NEW things to do (ride bikes to Dairy Queen. sleep in the treehouse)

things that SHOULD be done (stain the deck. paint the boys rooms.)

things we HOPE to do (visit Dorris Ranch. float the river.)

and things we may not ACTUALLY do, but it’s fun to dream and say maybe!? (build a zip-line in yard. go paintballing.)

the boys are excited to start checking those boxes off, and we left room at the bottom to add MORE great ideas as they come to us!

NOBODY looks back from October and says “Wow! wasn’t it FUN cleaning the garage this Summer?!  That was a MUCH better choice than sitting in the canoe-making ice cream-camping-catching frogs-riding bikes…”

We’ll get the garage clean, I know…but a higher, more lasting ambition is to create memories. And that takes:

 being purposeful,

making sacrifices,

and .59 cents for white posterboard.

I love gardening without gloves, learning history with my kids, cooking with lots of butter, serving others, great books, rich coffee, studying the Bible, camping outdoors, scrapbooking, vintage home decor, the smell of rain and cut grass, authentic people, poetry, laughing until your sides hurt, and babies. oh and black licorice is pretty awesome.

  1. Susan says:

Love it. We need to do that too. We have so many house projects that if we don’t write those down too they won’t get done, and I am a little annoyed that we don’t have many nice days to get all the outside work done. Oh well, if I don’t have a plan nothing will get done right! We really need to go to the beach more and we want to go camping more than once.
